Approximately 30 million Americans have diabetes, and 60 to 70% of them experience neuropathy, which causes pain, weakness, and numbness, particularly in the feet and hands. This condition makes diabetics more vulnerable to serious foot issues such as infections, calluses, and ulcers. To help prevent these complications and reduce the risk of lower limb amputations, Congress enacted the Medicare Therapeutic Shoe Bill, which provides Medicare coverage for specialty footwear and inserts for eligible individuals. Eligibility for these diabetic shoes may include a history of partial or complete foot amputation, previous foot ulceration, pre-ulcerative calluses, peripheral neuropathy with callus formation, foot deformities, or poor circulation.
